Studies on Sudomotor Dysfunction in People with MS
A review of 27 studies on 1,317 individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) assessed the prevalence of sudomotor dysfunction. Findings indicated that 33.0% exhibited symptoms based on questionnaires and 35.0% showed objective testing results. The absence of sympathetic skin response was notably 33.6% in MS patients, significantly more frequent compared to healthy controls with an odds ratio of 24.13.

Why it matters
Understanding the prevalence of sudomotor dysfunction in MS can help raise awareness about this potential complication and improve diagnosis and management strategies for affected individuals.
What this does not prove
The evidence regarding the prevalence from objective testing is of very low certainty, meaning the findings should be interpreted cautiously.

findingsAbsent sympathetic skin response had a pooled prevalence of 33.6% (95% CI 26.1-42.1%) and was more frequent in MS than in healthy controls (160/461 vs 0/342; OR 24.13, 95% CI 10.71-54.39; I²=0%).
limitationsCertainty of evidence for objective prevalence was very low.
