Elevated atherogenic index of plasma in multiple sclerosis: association with metabolic profile in a cross-sectional study.
In a study with 200 participants (100 with relapsing-remitting MS and 100 controls), levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were significantly higher in MS patients. AIP was independently associated with MS presence, but no link was found with disease severity or treatment effects.

Why it matters
These findings suggest a connection between metabolic dysregulation and MS, potentially highlighting systemic inflammatory components related to the disease.
What this does not prove
As an observational cross-sectional study, it cannot establish causation, and results may not apply to all MS subtypes or populations.

findingsRESULTS: Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, and AIP levels were significantly higher in patients with MS compared to controls (all p < 0.05), whereas no significant difference was observed in HDL levels.
