Association between cervical spinal cord plaque length and adjacent degenerative cervical changes in multiple sclerosis
In a study of 130 adults with confirmed MS, 92.3% showed degenerative cervical changes. A significant association was found between plaque length and degenerative severity, with longer plaques linked to higher Pfirrmann scores and more Modic changes. Specifically, each 1-mm increase in plaque length was associated with a 0.52-grade rise in degenerative severity.

Why it matters
Understanding the relationship between plaque length and degenerative changes can help in evaluating the progression of MS and its potential impacts on the cervical spine.
What this does not prove
This study does not establish causation, only association between plaque length and degenerative changes.

primary endpoint metCONCLUSION: Larger cervical demyelinating plaques were associated with more severe adjacent degenerative changes and greater same-level co-occurrence.
findingsRESULTS: Degenerative cervical changes were present in 92.3% of patients (mean age 36.2 ± 10.1 years; 72.3% female).
