Women with MS and ART: Meta-Analysis Findings
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 680 women with multiple sclerosis (MS) assessed the impact of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) on relapse risk. It found no significant increase in relapse risk associated with ART and noted that women who achieved pregnancy after ART had fewer relapses. The analysis also found no significant increase in incident MS risk linked to ART.

Why it matters
This study challenges older beliefs that ART may worsen relapse rates in women with MS, providing some reassurance for those considering ART. It helps clarify the relationship between ART and MS outcomes.
What this does not prove
While the results show no increased risk of relapse with ART, they do not capture all potential effects of ART on MS, and the study did not meet its primary endpoint. Further research is needed to fully understand long-term impacts.

interventionBACKGROUND: Historical studies suggested that assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) may increase relapse rates in women with multiple sclerosis (WwMS).
findingsWe conducted an updated systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify the effects of ART on MS relapse risk and assess whether ART is associated with incident MS in previously healthy women.
findingsWomen achieving pregnancy following ART experienced significantly fewer relapses (aRR 0.50, 95% CI 0.29-0.84); failed ART showed a nonsignificant trend towards increased relapse risk (aRR 1.31, 95% CI 0.96-1.79).
findingsART was not associated with an increased risk of incident MS in 2 studies.
